Invisalign and The Adult Lifestyle: What You Need to Know
In the past, if you had any type of dental-related issue that you were trying to correct, you essentially had one option available to you: braces. This bracket and wire system evolved dramatically over the years, but still had a number of shortcomings that made it difficult to fit in with the adult lifestyle so many enjoy.
For starters, braces are “permanent” in that you have to wear them for the entire duration of your treatment. This means that for one to two years (or more, depending on your situation), there are certain types of foods that you will absolutely have to avoid at all costs. Likewise, there’s the social aspect of braces – they’re usually seen as something for kids or at least younger people and, as a result, many older adults feel quite self-conscious about the decision to get them at all.
Thankfully, times have changed and a new option has emerged – Invisalign. Originally conceived in the 1990s as a series of basic, clear trays, Invisalign’s own website says that the system has been used to successfully treat more than three million patients around the world in the years since.
The Power of Invisalign: Breaking Things Down
Right away, the major thing that adults in particular love about Invisalign is that they can always be removed for special occasions. If there’s some special meal that you want to partake in, you don’t have to worry about it causing any problems because you can just remove the clear trays from your mouth in seconds and put them back in again when you’re done. While you should always wear your trays for as long as possible for the best results, this is absolutely a happy medium between the permanency of braces and the flexibility you’re looking for.
Because of that flexibility, there are absolutely NO diet restrictions that you’ll have to deal with, either. You can have all the hard, chewy or otherwise “problematic” foods that you’d like – all without worrying about them interfering with your treatment in any way.
Another one of the major reasons why adults, in particular, prefer Invisalign over braces has to do with the quick appointments with orthodontists that come with them. While you’ll still have to visit your orthodontist regularly to make sure your treatment is proceeding along as it should be, generally the sessions are far faster – especially if no actual adjustments are required.
Because the trays are removable, it’s also far easier to maintain an appropriate level of oral hygiene. The trays themselves are every bit as easy to brush as your teeth are.
That, coupled with the aesthetic factor (Invisalign trays are, as the name suggests, virtually invisible), and you have a perfect storm of advantages that seem tailor-made for the average adult lifestyle.
All this, and it’s important to remember that you’re also talking about a solution that is A) every bit as effective as traditional braces, and B) about the same cost. So while Invisalign may not be for everyone, it’s easy to see why so many people turn to it as an effective solution to all their dental needs.
